Collage is any work executed with more than one layer of support, using glue as an adhesive. The 3-D version of collage is assemblage. Collage started out as a peasant past time or hobby, cutting and pasting paper or picture in an ornamental design, like the lacey valentines of schoolgirls and housewives. Today, collage is a major art medium and assemblage is its extension. Both focus on creative imagination, intriguing tactile qualities, composition and visual/intellectual curiosity rather than manual dexterity and technical knowledge.
